Why School Grounds is an Eco-topic
Schools grounds have a big impact on how people feel about the school. When you think about it, you spend considerable time in the schools grounds. Does your school need some creativity and care?
School grounds can be changed in many ways to encourage biodiversity, learning, playing and socialising. Beautiful school grounds are more enjoyable to spend time in and will encourage everyone who uses the area to take good care of it.
If you choose the School Grounds Eco-topic you can made a real difference to an area you are in almost everyday. You can enjoy the benefits of the change and encourage a variety of plants and animals to live in this environment, increasing local biodiversity.

What Can You Do?
If you choose the School Grounds Eco-topic you can have a big impact on your school. Here are some ideas:
· Investigate your school grounds to see what is there already by looking at school buildings, spacious areas, features, the school grounds boundaries, entrances and places for plants and animals to live.
· Draw up a plan for change in the school grounds. You might want to think about an area for biodiversity, a quiet area for relaxing and an area for games and fun.
· To encourage biodiversity the following could be introduced: wildflower meadows, bird boxes, insect boxes, log piles, hedges, bat boxes, trees, vegetable patches, trees and flower pots.
· Artistic creations such as; sculptures, funky benches, wall murals, giant chess boards and pavement games could be brought into your school grounds.
· Apply for the Schools Grant Scheme and receive up to £1,000 to improve your school grounds.

- Enrich teaching and learning opportunities across the curriculum for the whole school community

- Encourage habitat creation, which enhances the biodiversity of schools grounds
- Encourage schools to make community links
- Encourage schools to value their grounds as a place for pupils to play, learn, and make important personal connections with the natural world.
